Question: What causes cold sores?
Answer:
Cold sores are caused by the virus known as herpes simplex or HSV. If you are exposed to the virus, especially when you have a break in the skin around or in your mouth, you may develop cold sores.

The virus that causes cold sores can be passed through anything from kissing to using another infected person’s razor. It can also be passed through saliva or from parent to child. However, exposure to the virus does not necessarily mean you will develop a cold sore. Some people can have the virus and never show symptoms.
