How to Highlight Your Own Hair

Women with Highlights

Not everyone wants to spend the time or the money at a salon getting highlights. Instead, they may opt for a more economical and time saving way to get professional looking highlights at home. Whether you choose to use a boxed solution or natural products, highlighting your hair can be tricky, especially if you don’t properly follow directions.

Creating Highlights with a Box Solution

Choose Your Color

Before you begin highlighting your hair, you need to make sure to choose the right color for your natural color. This is especially important if your hair is darker, as it can be difficult to find just the right shade. Check the box to make sure your hair color matches up to the shades pictured.

If this is the first time you are highlighting your hair yourself, it might be a good idea to practice first. You can use the tools provided in the coloring box, but instead of using the coloring product, use conditioner. This allows you to become more comfortable with the highlighting tools and to see where you want to place the color.

Protect Your Skin

Now that you are ready to highlight your hair, you need to protect your skin. Apply Vaseline or another ointment around your hairline. This helps to keep the bleaching agent from getting on your skin. Once your skin is protected, it is time to review the instructions in the box. Follow every single step as outlined, and never take highlighting into your own hands just because you think you know better. Remember, you are working with chemicals. If you are unsure about how many highlights to add, always start small. You can always go back in and add more, but you can’t remove them once you start.

The Technique

The easiest way to apply highlights is if your hair is divided into sections. Pick out the pieces you want to highlight and secure them with clips. Once you have selected all the pieces you want to highlight, pull the rest of your hair back in a ponytail. Now you are ready to apply the coloring product to your hair. Never apply the color directly to your roots. Instead, start a few inches below your roots and then comb the product all the way through your hair. Then go back and brush the product delicately onto the root area. This will ensure all the color is evenly distributed throughout your hair.

Finally, be sure to keep an eye on your highlights so they don’t become too light. Check the package instructions to determine how long you should leave the product on your hair.
