Believe it or not, it’s not just your skin that needs sun protection. Excessive exposure to summer sunshine can take a toll on your hair and lead to breakage, loss of elasticity and strength and faded hair color. So, don’t let the sun steal your healthy hair and protect it with the following tips.
Wear A Hat
The only way to completely protect your hair from the sun is wear a hat. I recommend a wide-brim version for full coverage. You can also wrap your hair in an article of clothing or a scarf.
An SPF 25 diluted with water works great (I only use natural sunscreens free of preservatives like parabens). Simply mix 3 teaspoons of sunscreen with a 1-1/2 cups of water and place in a spray bottle and apply when needed. Make sure to shake well before use.
Use Products With UV Protectants
Before going out in the sun apply a leave-in conditioner or styling product with UV protection. These products block some of the suns rays but tend to build-up on the scalp, so use a clarifying cleanser once a week or so to remove the residue.
Deep condition weekly with a formula that contains protein keratin. This will help contract the protein damage caused from the suns says.
Wet Your Hair Before Swimming
Salt and chlorine can quickly dry hair out, leaving your hair very vulnerable to the sun. By getting your hair wet before swimming in the pool or ocean, you will significantly reduce the amount of salt or chlorine absorbed bu your locks.
Rinse Your Hair After Swimming
Rinse your hair thoroughly with lukewarm water after swimming in a pool or ocean to remove all salt and chlorinated water.
Have a great and relaxing time soaking up the sun, but always make an effort to care for your hair! By following these steps above you will notice a huge difference in the overall look and texture of your hair!
