Coconut oil is one of nature’s most amazing wonders. Not only does it provide incredible benefits for your entire skin, it is also a highly effective hair treatment. Packed full of natural fatty acids, coconut oil is great for both moisturizing and nourishing your scalp and hair. It can improve shine, increase body, help reduce breakage, and eliminate split ends.
Additionally, the anti-fungal properties in coconut oil can also help you if you suffer from dandruff or dry, flaky scalp. The more regularly you use coconut oil, whether as a treatment for a hair or scalp condition, or as part of your normal hair care routine, the more benefits you will notice.
Deep Conditioning Hair Mask
The best way to incorporate coconut oil into your routine is as a deep conditioning treatment. Start by working a few tablespoons of organic coconut oil into your scalp and damp hair. If your hair is thinner, you may not want to work the oil into your scalp, as it can weigh your hair down. Be sure to use more oil at the ends of your hair, just like you would a conditioner, as this is where hair tends to be the driest or the most damaged. Once the oil is thoroughly worked into your hair, cover your hair with a hot towel or shower cap and let it sit for half an hour. Finally, rinse the coconut oil out of your hair and follow up with a thorough shampooing.
You can also use coconut oil as a detangler or as a dandruff treatment. To use it as a detangler, work a small amount into the ends of your freshly shampooed and conditioned hair and then comb through.
To treat your dandruff, apply a small amount of coconut oil onto your scalp. You can let the treatment stay in your hair for as little as 10 minutes, or even overnight, depending on how much of a dandruff problem you have. Be sure to wear a shower cap over your hair if you do leave it in overnight so it doesn’t get all over your pillow. Finish the treatment with a thorough shampooing.
