Question: Can birth control cause depression?
While more research is needed, recent studies do indicate that birth control doesn’t cause depression. In fact, one such study showed that women who use the pill, the patch and the ring reported lower levels of depressive type symptoms, and were less likely to attempt suicide.
Previous studies did report adverse mood effects in women who took birth control, but those studies only focused on short term use and therefore short term side effects. If you are experiencing mood changes or irritability while on birth control, you should talk to your doctor immediately.
