There are many different types of sulfates used shampoo.
- Sodium Lauryl Sulfate or SLS
- Sodium Laureth Sulfate or SLES
- Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate
- Sodium Myreth Sulfate
- TEA Laureth Sulfat
Sulfates, cheap, harsh detergents that are added to shampoos to create lather and cut oil, are believed to be the cause many issues. They have been accused of fading hair color, causing curly hair to become frizzy, worsening skin problems, irritating skin, causing hair loss and some even claim it can cause cancer, immune system damage, and damage to the skin.
With that said, I recommend avoiding the harsh chemicals in general and would opting for a sulfate-free formula. Sulfate-free shampoo has grown in popularity recently, partly because of the movement towards using more organic products, which help eliminate the amount of chemicals we are exposed to on a daily basis. They provide the same cleaning power, are more gentle on your hair and your scalp may be better able to regulate itself, which reduces dryness.
If your shampoo you use doesn’t state that it’s “sulfate free,” it’s probably not, so make sure to read labels.
