Different Types of Ponytail Hairstyles

For years, the ponytail has been the easy, go-to way to wear your hair up. Today, however this classic style is getting a sexy, trendy upgrade, and nowhere is that more true than on the red carpet. If you want to give your ponytail the red carpet look, check out the fun styles listed.

Mermaid Ponytail
This fun wavy ponytail is easy and stylish. To achieve this look, smooth damp hair back with a comb or brush, and secure your ponytail at either eye level or just below your ears. Next use a gel or scrunching spray on the ponytail to bring out a wavy texture.

Braided Ponytail
Braids are back this year in a big way, and you can easily incorporate them into your ponytail. Start by dividing your hair into two equal parts. Then, weave those strands loosely together, and finish off the look by adding an elastic just below the braided hair pieces.

Side Ponytail
The side ponytail is fun, flirty and the perfect style for any event. To achieve this soft curled look, section off pieces of your hair and then wrap them around a curling iron to create waves. Next, part your hair either down the center or on the side, which ever works best for your hair. Once your hair is parted, gather it into a low side ponytail and secure with a tie. Be sure to leave few loose strands to frame your face and complete your look.

Rockstar Ponytail
For a fun, glam look, with a bit of punk infusion, try the Rockstar ponytail. Start by adding gel to your hair and then combing it through your roots. Next, brush your hair into a high ponytail and fasten with a hair tie. Leave the ponytail smooth or use a scrunching or beach spray to mist the ponytail for a more tousled look. You can also opt to brush the front part of your hair into a faux-hawk type look and then smooth back for a more punk rocker look.

Glamour Ponytail
If celebs can rock a ponytail on the red carpet, you can wear one to your next black tie event, or anytime you want to feel a little glamorous. The key is to make sure your ponytail is sleek and smooth. Start by running gel or smooth styling spray through your hair. You can also use a shine oil or serum to smooth down any fly-aways. Then comb your hair back into either a medium or high ponytail. Next, pull a one-inch section over the elastic and pin down the ends under the ponytail. Finally, you can leave your ponytail, sleek and smooth or curl the ends with a one-inch curling iron. Finish off the look with strong-hold hair spray.
