Commercial lighteners are horrible for your strands, and can easily cause damage and dryness. If the idea of using harsh chemicals to lighten your hair is not your thing, there are many natural alternatives you can use. The results will not be as pronounced as there chemical counterpart but if repeated periodically you can achieve many levels of lift. Here are a few of the most tried and test options.
Method 1. Lemon Juice
One of the most popular options and it’s so simple. If you can do this treatment to hair that hasn’t been washed for 2 days because your hair’s natural oils help prevent damage and drying.
Mix & WetCombine equal parts fresh squeezed lemon juice and water in a spray bottle. Wet your hair and then gently towel dry it. This helps prevent the lemon juice solution from over drying your hair. |
Apply the SolutionApply the lemon juice solution liberally over your hair focusing on areas you desire lighter results. The more you use the lighter your hair will be. |
Hit the SunThe sun activates the lemon juice lifting your hair up to a few shades lighter. Give your hair up to 30 minutes of direct sun lite. The longer the exposure the lighter the results. |
Rinse Your HairThoroughly rinse your hair with cool water, then shampoo and condition and allow your hair to air dry. |
Method 2. Honey
Naturally containing a small amount of hydrogen peroxide, honey will give your hair natural lift. Make sure to use a high quality “raw” honey and distilled water for this method.
Make the MixtureCombine 1 part honey to 4 parts distilled water and then let the mixture rest at room temperature for at least one hour. Resting the mixture activates the mixture and is what gives the honey it lightening power. For a little added power include 1 part lemon juice. |
ApplyPut the mixture in a squeeze bottle, dampen your hair and began applying the mixture to your hair. Work it in good with your fingers to make sure every strand is completely saturated. I recommend doing the step standing in the bathtub because it can get messy. |
Let It SitNow, cover your hair with a shower cap and let it sit 2 hours up to overnight. If you don’t have a cap you can use a plastic grocery bag. |
Rinse WellAfter your desired length of time, shampoo and condition your hair as usual. The results will vary depending on your hair but should be immediate. |
