Muscle Spasms

Question: What causes muscle spasms?
Answer:
Muscle spasms are caused by involuntary muscle contractions. Spasms occur most commonly in the legs, especially the calves and feet, but they can also happen in the back, hands, and stomach area. Muscle spasms are usually the result of dehydration or an electrolyte imbalance; however they can also be caused by neurotransmitter abnormalities.

Typically, the pain caused by muscle spasms only lasts for a short time, and is often relieved by stretching out the muscle. However, for spasms caused by abnormalities, medication and/or treatment may be required.
