There are 8 basic face shapes and determining which your are will help you best compliment your features when you try a new hairstyle, groom your eyebrows or even when buying a new pair of glasses.

To properly evaluate your facial shape, you need to stand in a well lit room looking straight into a mirror. The first question you have to ask you self is what is the general shape of your face, wide, average or narrow. Use your hairline and jaw line as a reference. Next, locate the widest part of your face. Picture an imaginary line going across the widest point of your forehead and jaw line. Determine if your forehead is wider than your jaw or vice versa or if they are the same width. Next, look at your chin and decide it’s general shape; round, square or pointy. Lastly, measure the length of your face (measure, with a tape measure, from the middle of your hairline to the point of your chin and the width of your face (measure just past the outer corner of your eye in a straight line across the bridge of your nose to just past the outer corner of your other eye) and compare their widths.

Now that you’ve take your measurements, it’s time to evaluate your results. Here are the 8 face shapes and their unique characteristics

 
 

Round Face

The length and width of face is similar with no major corners at the jaw. The middle portion of the face is wider than the forehead and jaw line creating the round appearance.

Square Face

A strong jaw line is common with a square face. The cheekbone, brow bone, and jaw usually have a similar length and width.

Rectangle Face

A square face that is about one and a half times longer than they it is wide. The cheeklines from the temple to jawline is straight.

Oval Face

Considered the most universal and appealing of the facial shapes because the jaw line is more narrow then the temples creating soft features. If you have an oval face shape consider yourself lucky, you can wear almost any hair style.

Oblong aka a Long Face

This is when cheekbone and brow bone are similar in width but the length of the face is noticeably longer.

Diamond Face

Your cheekbones are noticeably wider than your brow bone and jaw line, resulting in a narrow forehead and jaw line.

Pear/Triangle Shaped Face

Your cheekbones are noticeably wider than your brow bone and jaw line, resulting in a narrow forehead and jaw line.

Inverted Triangle/Heart Shaped Face

A wide forehead with the jaw line and chin narrowing.
