You put your hair through a lot, from coloring and styling to long summer days in the sun. Over time, the damage can become more noticeable. Instead of spending even more money on expensive salon treatments, you can choose to treat your damaged hair at home with some all-natural hair masks.
Banana & Honey Strengthening Mask
Ideal for thinner hair, this mask strengthens hair without weighing it down.
- 1 tbsp. Honey
- 1 very ripe Banana
Place the banana and honey in a blender and mix until well combined. Once the mixture is smooth, apply it to your hair and then wrap your hair in plastic wrap or a shower cap. Leave the mask on your hair for about 20 minutes before rinsing out. Finally, shampoo and condition your hair as you normally would.
Cornstarch/Baking Soda Mask
Ideal for oily or greasy hair. Can also be used to remove excess product build-up.
- 1 tbsp. Cornstarch or 1-2 tbsp. Baking Soda
Cornstarch works great as an alternative to dry shampoo. Place the cornstarch into a salt or peppershaker and then sprinkle on your dry scalp. Let the cornstarch sit on your hair for about 10 minutes before brushing it out completely.
If you don’t have cornstarch, you can use baking soda instead. Mix a couple of tablespoons of cornstarch with water until it forms a paste. Work the paste into damp hair and let it sit for about 15 minutes. Rinse the paste out and then shampoo your hair.
Avocado & Olive Oil Mask
Perfect for adding moisture back into dry, damaged hair.
- 1 Avocado
- 2 tsp. Olive Oil
Mash up an avocado and then combine with 1-2 teaspoons of olive oil. After separating your hair into different sections, apply the avocado/oil mask to each section, starting with the bottom first. For more oily hair, avoid applying the mask to your scalp or crown of your head. Once your hair is completely saturated with the mask, cover it with a shower cap or plastic wrap. Let it sit on your hair for about 30 minutes. Finally, rinse the mask from your hair and shampoo and condition your hair as usual.
Maple Syrup & Olive Oil Mask
Ideal for very dry hair or brittle hair prone to breakage and split ends.
- 3-4 tbsp. Maple Syrup
- 2 tsp. Olive Oil
Combine 3-4 tablespoons of maple syrup with 1 teaspoon of honey. Place in a microwave-safe bowl and microwave for 15 seconds, or until the mixture has melted together. Let the mixture cool enough so that it won’t burn your scalp. Using a wide-tooth comb, apply the mixture to your hair. Then, cover your hair in a plastic shower cap or with plastic wrap and let it sit for 20 minutes. Finish by rinsing the mixture out of your hair and then shampoo and condition your hair.
