If you are a women attending a funeral, choose an outfit that is more on the business formal side and never wear anything low cut or that shows too much leg. If you are worried about that your dress or skirt is too short, pair it with dark tights or pantyhose. Wearing a sleeveless dress or top is not really appropriate either, so bring a jacket, scarf or shawl with you to cover up your arms. Closed toed shoes are also recommended.
For men attending a funeral, you should always opt for a dark colored suit and tie. You want to choose a suit and tie that is subdued and appropriate for the occasion; this is not the time to be flashy. If you don’t have a suit, you can wear a dark shirt with dark pants. A white, light blue or gray shirt will also work. No matter what you wear, always pair it with dark shoes and socks. Black shoes are optimal, but dark brown will do if you don’t own a pair of black.
