How to Get Beach Wave Hair

Beach Wave Hair

Beach Wave Hair

Is your hair is feeling dry, dull and damaged from all the teasing, brushing, heat styling and straightening. Daily hair styling can be very harsh on your hair so opt for a more natural, beachy wave. Sexy, beach waves work well with all hair types and will never go out of style. You can achieve this look with four easy methods.

Method 1 – Braiding Your Hair

Step 1.

Shampoo, Condition & Towel Dry

I recommend cleansing and conditioning with a thickening formula so that it defines curls and waves, rather than straightens. When towel drying your hair use a patting motion or wrap your hair in a towel and squeeze as opposed to rubbing. Then gently detangle with a wide-toothed comb. You don’t have to have freshly clean your hair for this method to work. If your hair is clean simply dampen it thoroughly with a spray bottle.

Step 2.

Begin Braiding

Evenly part your hair down the middle. Start French braiding each side at the point where you want the waves to extend to. Braid the hair all the way down to the tips and secure tightly with rubber bands.

Step 3.

Let Your Hair Dry

By allowing your hair to completely dry in the braids your hair will lock in the curves and kinks. For the best result let your hair dry naturally but if you are in a hurry you can use a blow dryer on a low setting to speed up the process. If you take the braids out prematurely, the waves will not hold.

Step 4.

Remove The Braids

Gently remove the rubber bands and loosen the braids. Then use a finishing spray to lock in the waves if your hair tends to fall throughout the day.

Method 2 – Salt Spray

Step 1.

Shampoo, Condition & Towel Dry

Shampoo, condition and towel dry your hair using a patting motion or wrap your hair in a towel and squeeze as opposed to rubbing aggressively. Then gently detangle with a wide-toothed comb. If you don’t need to wash your hair, simply mist it thoroughly with a spray bottle.

Step 2.

Apply Salt Spray

Spray hair with salt spray and evenly work it into hair from the roots on down to the ends. There are many salt sprays made commercially but I prefer making my own.

Step 3.

Scrunch Hair

Cup the ends of your hair and scrunch towards your roots and then squeeze when you reach to your scalp. Do this to all of your hair and repeat the process every few minutes. For a curlier wave, wrap strands of hair around your finger and let then slip off. For less wave and more of a textured straight look, tousle your hair instead of scrunching.

Step 4.

Let Hair Dry

You can let your hair dry naturally or speed up the drying process with a blow dryer and diffuser.

Method 3 – Use A Curling Iron

Step 1.

Choose A Curling Iron

I like to use a clipless model but any curling iron will work. If you have short hair use a 1″ curling iron. For those with long hair use a 1 1/2″-2″ iron for large, loose waves or a 1″ for tighter waves. If your hair is naturally straight you probably want to use a 1″ because your hair will loose the wave faster.

Step 2.

Shampoo, Condition & Towel Dry

Cleanse and condition your hair with a thickening formula. Then towel dry your hair using patting motion or wrap your hair in a towel and squeeze as opposed to rubbing. Next, gently detangle with a wide-toothed comb. You don’t have to have freshly clean your hair for this method to work. If your hair is clean apply a thermal protectant and proceed to step 5.

Step 3.

Apply Product

Apply a curl enhancing product and evenly distribute throughout your hair from roots to tips. Then, scrunch your hair with your fingers by cupping the ends and squeezing them towards your roots.

Step 4.

Blow Dry

Dry your hair completely with a blow dryer and diffuser. Use the diffuser to lift your ends and scrunch them towards your scalp. Hold for a few seconds and repeat until all of your hair is dry.

Step 5.

Create the Waves With The Iron

Select random 1″-2″ strands and wrap the hair around the barrel holding the hair by the tips. Hold for a few seconds and repeat. Switch up the direction and angle that you wrap to produce natural looking waves. If you are using a spring iron make sure not to clamp the hair as you will get ringlets instead of waves.

Step 6.

Finish The Style

Gently apply a finishing serum to help prevent frizz and loosen and blend the curls for a choppy effect at the ends. Lastly, flip your head upside down and spray with a hairspray while scrunching your hair with your hands to lock in the waves.

Method 4 – Mini Buns

Step 1.

Shampoo, Condition & Towel Dry

Shampoo, condition and towel dry your hair using a gentle, patting motion opposed to rubbing your hair aggressively. Then softly detangle with a wide-toothed comb. If your hair is already clean, simply dampen it thoroughly with a spray bottle.

Step 2.

Section Hair

Part your hair into 4 sections, top right, top left, bottom right and bottom left. Then spray each section lightly with hairspray and secure with a rubber band close to the scalp.

Step 3.

Create Mini Buns

Start twisting the first ponytail away from your face. Twist until the length of hair begins to coil on it’s own. Once it is completely coiled to the ends, use pins to secure it in place. Repeat to the other ponytails.

Step 4.

Let The Buns Dry

Allow the buns to dry completely, the longer you dry it, the tighter and longer-lasting your wave will be. I usually let them dry throughout the night but if you don’t have that much time you can speed up the process with a blow dryer.

Step 5.

Remove The Buns

Once completely dry, remove the bobby pins and uncoil the buns. Gently separate the curls by running your fingers through your hair and then lock in your waves with a light application of hairspray. You can also spray your hair with a little salt spray and scrunch for added definition.
