Highlight Hair Naturally

Highlighting your hair with chemicals is not for everyone. Luckily, there are natural alternatives you can try use, including some products you probably have at home.

Lemon Juice

One of the easiest ways to highlight your hair naturally is with lemon juice. Combine equal parts water and fresh squeezed lemon and pour into a spray bottle. You can reuse a bottle you already have as long as it did not previously contain toxic chemicals. Separate your hair into sections and secure the parts you want to highlight with clips. Pull the rest of your hair back in a ponytail. Next, spray the lemon juice mixture on the hair you want to highlight and let sit for 30 minutes under natural sunlight. Finally, rinse out the mixture and condition your hair as usual.

Another method that has grown in popularity is using henna paste. This natural paste is great for highlighting your hair, though it does take a bit longer to prepare. Start by mixing a few tablespoons of henna powder with ½ cup of boiling water. Let the mixture sit for 12 hours before using. Once you are ready to use the henna, be sure to use gloves and wear a shirt or towel that you don’t mind getting stained. Henna in very pigmented and stains easily, so you also want to apply a skin protecting ointment to your hairline. With gloved hands, pick up the henna mixture and work it into the strands of hair you wish to highlight. Then let it sit in your hair for 2-3 hours before rinsing it completely out and applying conditioner.

Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide can also been used to highlight your hair, especially if you want very light highlights. Mix together a solution of equal parts water and peroxide and pour into a bowl. Next, dip large cotton balls into the mixture and wipe them through the hair you wish to highlight. Let the mixture sit for about 20 minutes before rinsing out and conditioning your hair as usual. If you still want your highlights to be lighter, you can reapply the peroxide in a couple of weeks so as not to dry or damage your hair.

Start by mixing 4 parts honey with 1 part water or apple cider vinegar to loosen the honey and make it easier to apply. Allow the mixture to sit for 30 minutes before application. Once the mixture has rested, drape a towel over you shoulders to protect your clothes and pour the mixture on your head in small section and massage it into your hair. Repeat until all of your hair is evenly and complete covered in the lightener. Cover you hair in a plasic cap and let it sit for 2 hours. Rinse the honey mixture it out with warm water, then shampoo and condition your hair as usual.
